Infrared Sauna
Sweat deeper. Recover faster. Live better.
Far-infrared wavelengths penetrate 1.5 inches into body tissue — deeper than conventional heat can reach — mobilizing heavy metals, inflammatory compounds, and metabolic waste from fat stores and tissue in a way that surface sweating alone cannot match.
Traditional saunas work by heating the air around you, which in turn heats the surface of your body. They are effective and well-studied — but they operate at 180–220°F, which limits session duration and excludes many people who find extreme ambient heat uncomfortable or medically inadvisable.
Far-infrared saunas operate at 120–150°F while achieving greater tissue penetration. The far-infrared wavelengths (7–14 micrometers) are selectively absorbed by water molecules in the body's tissues — resonating at the molecular level and generating heat within the tissue itself rather than from the outside in. This mechanism enables the infrared sauna to penetrate 1.5 inches into muscle, connective tissue, and fat stores — reaching toxin reservoirs that conventional heat never touches.
The result is a more comfortable session at a lower ambient temperature that achieves deeper detoxification, more profound muscle relaxation, and greater cardiovascular conditioning response — with a sweat volume that typically exceeds what a traditional sauna produces at far higher temperatures.
What to Expect
What This Therapy Helps With
How It Works
Far-infrared radiation falls in the 7–14 micrometer wavelength range — the same range emitted by the human body itself. When absorbed by water molecules in tissue, this radiation causes molecular resonance that generates heat from within the tissue rather than from the surrounding air. This enables deeper penetration than conventional hot air saunas while operating at significantly lower ambient temperatures.
Far-IR absorption by tissue water molecules generates intramuscular heat from within
Core temperature rise of 1–3°C: triggers the same cardiovascular response as moderate aerobic exercise (increased heart rate, cardiac output, and peripheral vasodilation)
Heavy sweating: toxin-laden sweat excretes heavy metals and organic toxins from fat stores mobilized by thermal energy
Muscle viscosity reduction: elevated intramuscular temperature improves extensibility, reduces spasm, and facilitates myofascial release
Heat shock proteins: elevated core temperature activates Hsp70 and other heat shock proteins — key regulators of protein repair and cellular stress tolerance
Endorphin release: thermal stress triggers the same endorphin cascade as vigorous exercise
Research & Clinical Evidence
Infrared Sauna for Detoxification
A clinical review in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health analyzed sweat composition from infrared sauna sessions.
- ·Significantly higher concentrations of heavy metals in infrared sauna sweat vs. exercise sweat
- ·BPA, phthalates, and other persistent organics detected in sauna sweat
- ·More toxin excretion per session vs. traditional sauna at equivalent time
- ·Well-tolerated with no adverse safety signals
Infrared Sauna for Cardiovascular Health
A randomized controlled trial in JAMA Internal Medicine examined far-infrared sauna use for cardiovascular outcomes in congestive heart failure patients.
- ·Significant improvement in exercise tolerance
- ·Reduction in plasma brain natriuretic peptide (heart failure marker)
- ·Improved endothelial function
- ·Reduced systolic blood pressure
Sauna Bathing & All-Cause Mortality
A landmark prospective cohort study from Finland (JAMA Internal Medicine) followed 2,315 men over 20 years, examining sauna frequency and health outcomes.
- ·Dose-dependent reduction in cardiovascular disease mortality (up to 63% reduction at 4–7x/week)
- ·Reduced all-cause mortality
- ·Lower incidence of Alzheimer's and dementia
- ·Inverse association with stroke risk

What a Session Feels Like
The infrared sauna at MK Wellness is a private, comfortable cabin. The ambient temperature is warm but not overwhelming — most clients find it pleasant where they might struggle in a traditional sauna. Within the first 10 minutes, sweating begins deeply and profusely. The heat has a penetrating quality — clients consistently describe feeling the warmth in their muscles, not just on their skin. By the end of the session, a thorough sweat and profound muscle relaxation are the norm.
