Full Body Red Light Therapy equipment at MK Wellness Spa

Red and near-infrared light occupy a narrow band of the electromagnetic spectrum with a remarkable biological property: they are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, the terminal enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. When stimulated by these wavelengths, mitochondria produce more ATP, reduce oxidative stress, and signal a cascade of downstream repair and regeneration processes.

At MK Wellness, we use a full-body panel delivering five clinical wavelengths — 633nm, 660nm, 810nm, 850nm, and 940nm — each targeting different tissue depths and cellular mechanisms. The result is a 15-minute session that triggers collagen synthesis, accelerates muscle recovery, reduces systemic inflammation, and supports neurological function simultaneously.

The research base for photobiomodulation (the scientific term for red and near-infrared light therapy) is one of the most substantial in wellness science — with over 5,000 peer-reviewed studies and growing clinical adoption across sports medicine, dermatology, and neurology.

Mechanism

How It Works

Photobiomodulation works through a direct photochemical mechanism: photons of specific wavelengths are absorbed by chromophores within mitochondria — primarily cytochrome c oxidase — triggering a cascade of intracellular signaling that upregulates energy production and repair processes. Different wavelengths penetrate to different depths: 633–660nm targets superficial tissue (skin, superficial muscle), while 810–940nm penetrates deeper into muscle, bone, and neural tissue.

633nm/660nm — absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in superficial cells; drives collagen synthesis, skin repair, and surface inflammation reduction

810nm — optimal near-infrared penetration; stimulates deep tissue repair, neural tissue, and thyroid

850nm — deep muscle and joint penetration; primary wavelength for athletic recovery and joint pain

940nm — greatest tissue depth; supports bone, vascular tissue, and deep neural structures

All wavelengths — reduce oxidative stress by increasing antioxidant enzyme production (catalase, superoxide dismutase)

Systemic effect — anti-inflammatory cytokine shift; reduction in TNF-α, IL-6, and prostaglandin E2

Evidence Base

Research & Clinical Evidence

Photobiomodulation for Muscle Recovery & Performance

A 2016 meta-analysis in the Journal of Athletic Training examined red and near-infrared light therapy across 13 randomized controlled trials involving athletic populations.

  • ·Significant reduction in DOMS (24–72 hours post-exercise)
  • ·Faster return to baseline strength after eccentric exercise
  • ·Reduced creatine kinase levels (muscle damage marker)
  • ·Improved time-to-exhaustion in subsequent performance tests

Red Light Therapy for Skin Rejuvenation & Collagen

A randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology examined 633nm and 830nm light on facial aging markers.

  • ·Significant improvement in skin complexion and texture
  • ·Collagen density increase confirmed by skin biopsy
  • ·Reduction in fine lines and rhytides
  • ·Improved intradermal collagen density at 12-week follow-up

Near-Infrared Light for Neurological Function

Research from Boston University Medical Center examined transcranial near-infrared stimulation on cognitive function and neuroinflammation.

  • ·Improved executive function and sustained attention
  • ·Reduction in neuroinflammatory markers
  • ·Enhanced cerebral blood flow
  • ·Positive effects on mood and depression scores

The Experience

What a Session Feels Like

A red light session is one of the most pleasant experiences in the building. You stand or lie in front of a full-body panel radiating warm, visible red light and invisible near-infrared. There's a gentle warmth — more like sunlight on skin than heat — and most clients describe a calm, meditative quality to the experience.

You may notice

Gentle, penetrating warmth across the entire body
Visible red glow (most clients find it pleasant; eye protection provided)
Deep relaxation and mental stillness
Mild elevation in skin temperature
Some clients notice a pleasant tingling in areas of prior injury
15 min sessions
Ideal Client

Who It's Great For

Athletes who train hard and need to recover faster
Anyone dealing with chronic joint pain or arthritis
Those pursuing skin health, anti-aging, or collagen support
Post-surgical recovery patients (with physician clearance)
Anyone seeking to amplify the effects of other modalities
Those experiencing brain fog, poor focus, or low mood
Individuals with thyroid conditions (consult physician)
Biohackers prioritizing mitochondrial and cellular health
